Musical Donations

Two Locust Valley students used their musical talents for a good cause. Sixth grader Elisabeth Baumann and high school sophomore Anne Holmuller participated in a “Practice-a-Thon” to benefit the Harry Chapin Food Bank.  The students received pledges from friends and family based on the number of minutes they practiced. The girls raised nearly $200 for the food bank, practicing for 500 minutes.  With the support of the entire music department, the girls not only worked hard to help people less fortunate, but also gained personally from the positive experience.

District Art Show

The District Art Show, featuring student artwork, will be held on Wednesday, June 6th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m in the HS/MS mini-theater. Artwork will be on display in the mini-theater for the entire week, from June 4th-June 8th.

The art show is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend!

Joe Enea Named Wrestling Coach of the Year!

Locust Valley High School Wrestling Coach, Joseph Enea, has been named Nassau County Rookie Coach of the Year. The award was given to Mr. Enea by the Nassau County Wrestling Coaches Association. based on his excellent coaching abilities during the 2011-2012 wrestling season.

Mr. Enea was chosen as Coach of the Year from among all of the Nassau County wrestling coaches who have been head coaches for four years or less.

“Joe Enea is a true asset to the Locust Valley wrestling program and very deserving of this honor,” said, Mark J. Dantuono, Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics. “He makes the team the best they can be and in turn they respect him and work hard for him and for themselves.”

LVMS Wins Gold Medal in MATHCOUNTS

Locust Valley Middle School mathematicians won the gold medal in the MATHCOUNTS competition at Hofstra University.  Students competed against their peers from other Long Island school districts and 20 LVMS students earned the highest level of achievement possible for the second year in a row.

Through the MATHCOUNTS program, students who excel in math are given the opportunity to explore advanced mathematical concepts beyond their normal grade level. MATHCOUNTS is a national program that inspires excellence, confidence and curiosity in middle school students, providing them with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers.

LVMS will be entered into a drawing for $500 in gift cards and the grand prize of a trip to Orlando, FL to witness the Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition - 2012.

Record Number of LV Students Recognized in National Foreign Language Contest

More than thirty middle school and high school students participating in the National Foreign Language Exams, earned high scores which qualified them for recognition. Eighth grader Arthur Babcock won a cash award for placing third in the Italian contest. He is the first Locust Valley student to earn this award.

A record number of students participated in the national foreign language exams in French, Italian and Spanish.  Given across the country, these exams recognize achievement in the study of the language and promote proficiency as well.  Students voluntarily participate annually in order to further enhance their learning of French, Italian and Spanish.

LVHS Quintuplets Chosen for Project Prom

After being nominated by health and physical education teacher Laura Vera, LVHS seniors Brianna, Francesca, Marissa, Austin, and Brandon Carbone were chosen for Newsday's Project Prom.

Treated like celebrities, the quintuplets spent a day trying on glamorous gowns and tuxedos that they will be able to wear to the LVHS prom. The public gets to vote on which dresses the girls will wear.

Ms. Vera said she nominated the quintuplets because they are all wonderful kids.

Senior Breaks 30-Year-Old Track Record!

Senior Niklas Helmick broke the LVHS record in the 400m with a time of 52.0. The record was previously held by Don Munson since 1982 at a time of 52.2. Niklas has been a dominant runner all season and is the team leader in points. He also won the 200m and anchored the winning 4x400m team with Kevin Jania, Brandon Maraboli, and Alex Van Patten. Helmick and his teammates are hoping to build off of the regular season success as the post season begins.

Students Clean House at Digital Media Arts Show

Five Locust Valley High School students were honored by the Board of Education for winning “Best in Show” at the digital media arts annual show held at Five Towns College.  Marisa Chafetz, Ariana Falzarano, Christopher Minafo, Madison Davidson, and Ryan Conlon each received this award. Ariana and Ryan were multiple winners of best in show.

The students, who are all in Mr. Camilleri’s digital arts course, entered graphic design work, digital paintings, and digital photographs in the competition/critique.  The work of these LVHS artists surpassed entries from more than 200 students and 30 schools across Long Island. Entries were critiqued and judged by various local artists, educators, and professionals.

Congratulations to the students on this achievement and to their teacher Mr. Camilleri.
